Effective August 1, 2014, Councilman Jim Newell of Ward 3 in the City of Tupelo announced his resignation from the Tupelo City Council. Mr. Newell and his wife are relocating and will no longer reside within Ward 3.
Pursuant to Mississippi Code 21-3-11, any person elected to represent a particular ward is required to vacate his or her seat should he or she remove their residence from that ward.
“It is with a heavy heart that I accept Mr. Newell’s resignation. In addition to endorsing me on my campaign for mayor, he has been a strong ally and a trusted advisor,” said Mayor Jason Shelton. “I have the utmost respect for Mr. Newell and he will be greatly missed on the Council.”
Council President Mike Bryan said, “I have enjoyed working with Mr. Newell over the past five years. I wish him and Annis all the best.”
Pursuant to Mississippi law, a special election will be held.
“Mr. Newell is a friend and a great public servant,” said Mayor Shelton, “I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
