City residents invited to help celebrate milestone
September 6, 2017
TUPELO, MS – The ribbon cutting for the Lee Acres Storm Shelter is set for Monday, September 11, 6 p.m., at the shelter located in Dot Cooper Park.
The 6,813 square-foot structure is designed to protect 1,179 residents. It was built to withstand winds of up to 250 mph.
Ninety percent of the funding for the project and a similar one at Theron Nichols Park was the result of a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant. The City of Tupelo paid for the other 10 percent. Nearly $1.1 million of the grant was designated for the Lee Acres structure.
JBHM designed the project.
